For those thinking about quitting smoking, the
Institute for Prevention Saint Barnabas Behavioral
Health Network is
pleased to offer free nicotine patches for the
first two weeks of the six-week program to residents
of Essex, Monmouth and Ocean counties who sign
up with the Institute for Prevention’s
Quit Center. With a weak economy
and the new federal tobacco tax increase bringing
up the cost of a pack of cigarettes to $7.50, now
is a great time to quit smoking. This offer expires
on June 30, 2010.
The Institute for Prevention’s on-site tobacco treatment program
is researched-based and modeled after the Mayo Clinic. According to
the Surgeon General's report, 70 percent of all smokers desire to quit
but only 3 percent are successful on their own. The key to quitting
is with a planned and professionally supported approach to dealing with
nicotine addiction.
According to the New Jersey QuitNet®, research shows that smokers
who use Quit Services are 10 times more likely
to succeed in quitting than smokers who quit without help. Quitting
isn't just a matter of willpower. Smoking involves a powerful three-pronged
dependence on tobacco: the physical dependence on nicotine, the psychological
attachment to smoking to relieve stress and deal with problems, and
the powerful habits developed around smoking in conjunction with daily
activities. All three dependencies need to be addressed to succeed in
quitting smoking and The Institute for Prevention Quit Center uses a
comprehensive approach to address all of them.
The six-week program
consists of group and/or individual coaching.
Participants in the program receive:
- A one-on-one comprehensive assessment
- An individualized Quit Smoking Plan
- Up to date information on medications and nicotine replacement therapies
- Strategies for overcoming cravings and dealing with withdrawal symptoms
- Weight management tips
- Techniques on reducing stress
- Suggestions for preventing relapse
