Lakewood, NJ - In conjunction with World No Tobacco Day on
May 31st, the Institute for Prevention Saint Barnabas
Behavioral Health Network is pleased to offer a special discount
to businesses in Monmouth and Ocean counties who
sign-up for the Institute’s
on-site tobacco treatment program during the month
of June.
David Wintrode, President of the Causeway Family of Dealerships in
Manahawkin, realized early on that happy and healthy employees increase
productivity and hired The Institute for Prevention to run a tobacco
cessation program for his employees.
“I have been impressed with the comprehensive nature of the Institute
for Prevention’s tobacco cessation program and with Helene Long,
IFP’s Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Helene completed 25
individual employee assessments and created an individual treatment
plan for each employee. Helene is also overseeing a 4-week and
6-month follow-up and I am hopeful that my employees will be successful
in their efforts to quit smoking,” said Mr. Wintrode.
According to statistics from the New Jersey QuitNet®, the cost
of employee smoking has a negative impact on a business's bottom line
both in terms of direct medical expenses and lost productivity. For
example:
- Each smoker generates $1,623 in excess medical expenditures
each year.
- Smokers incur higher lifetime medical expenses when compared to
nonsmokers -- $15,800 (in 2002 dollars) more for men and $17,500 more
for women.
In terms of employee productivity, studies show that smokers use a
higher number of sick days and have longer absences than nonsmokers.
As a result, businesses may incur project delays or other employees
may have to work overtime to take up their work load, thus increasing
business expenses.
The Institute for Prevention’s on-site tobacco treatment program
is researched-based and modeled after the Mayo
Clinic. According to the Surgeon General's report,
70 percent of all smokers desire to quit but only three percent are
successful on their own. The key to
quitting is with a planned and professionally supported
approach to dealing with nicotine addiction.
The eight-week program consists of group and/or individual coaching.
Participants in the program receive:
- A one-on-one comprehensive assessment
- An individualized Quit Smoking Plan
- Up to date information on medications and nicotine replacement therapies
- Strategies for overcoming cravings and dealing with withdrawal symptoms
- Weight management tips
- Techniques on reducing stress
- Suggestions for preventing relapse
