Alcohol Prevention Teach-in Presented by Institute for Prevention of Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Center

The Institute for Prevention of the Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Network has partnered with Deputy Chief Joseph E. Tutella, III of the Newark Police Department to teach a lesson on the dangers of underage drinking to 5th grade students at McKinley Elementary School on Wednesday, April 22nd at 10am.  The program is presented in collaboration with the national Reach Out Now  initiative and in keeping with its mission of preventing the early onset of alcohol, tobacco and drug use.

Since 2001, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through its Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, has collaborated with Scholastic Inc. to prevent underage alcohol use. The Reach Out Now initiative provides fifth- and sixth-grade teachers with an attractively designed package of materials aligned with national education standards.

“The Institute for Prevention is extremely pleased that Deputy Chief Tutella is leading the 5th grade teach-in on underage drinking at McKinley Elementary.  It is imperative that our youth have role models to whom they can look up.  Deputy Chief Tutella is an outstanding example of a community leader,” said Connie Greene, Institute for Prevention Vice President.

The mission of the Institute for Prevention (IFP) is to reduce the factors that place individuals, families and communities at risk and to promote healthy lifestyles.
