Institute for Prevention Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Network Organizes Alcohol Prevention Teach-In

In collaboration with the national Reach Out Now (RON) initiative, and in keeping with its mission of preventing the early onset of alcohol, tobacco and drug use, the Institute for Prevention Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Network has partnered with the City of East Orange Mayor Robert L. Bowser to teach a lesson on the dangers of underage drinking. The Mayor will address a group of 5th grade students at East Orange Louverture Elementary School on Wednesday, April 15th at 11am.

Since 2001, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through its Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), has collaborated with Scholastic Inc. to prevent underage alcohol use. The Reach Out Now (RON) initiative provides fifth- and sixth-grade teachers with an attractively designed package of materials aligned with national education standards.

“The Institute for Prevention is enthusiastic about Mayor Bowser leading the 5th grade teach-in on underage drinking at Louverture Elementary.  Our youth need role models to whom they can look up, and Mayor Bowser is a great example of a community leader,”  said Connie Greene, Institute for Prevention Executive Director.

The mission of the Institute for Prevention Behavioral Health Network is to reduce the factors that place individuals, families and communities at risk and to promote healthy lifestyles.  A leader in the delivery and development of specialized prevention and proactive programming, the Institute promotes professional and personal development through a variety of individualized programs designed to meet the needs of all segments of society.
