Toms River, NJ, May 17, 2010 …….The Saint Barnabas Institute for Prevention held a workshop for teens on developing self-esteem and positive peer relationships in April for over thirty teenage girls from the Lakewood High School and Middle School entitled Love Yourself, Love Your Sister.
Rev. Rachel Saguero delivered opening remarks for the program and urged the girls to focus on the concept that one’s past is not their potential. She also discussed the many wonderful opportunities that come with getting to know someone’s true character, as opposed to creating judgments based on their race, culture and/or religion.
Throughout the workshop, the girls participated in various activities that provided them with the opportunity to express themselves, focus on their feelings and discuss important relationships in their own lives. Upon realizing how much they have in common, the girls formed bonds and shared emotional moments. In one instance, one of the girls dedicated a song to a parent who died earlier that year.
“The Love Yourself, Love Your Sister Program offered our girls a unique and powerful opportunity to begin understanding their infinite potential to change the course of their lives in ways they may not have fathomed before. I am very grateful to the Saint Barnabas Institute for Prevention for their work to support the students of Lakewood,” said Lydia Silva, Superintendent of Lakewood Schools.
Love Yourself, Love Your Sister program was made possible by a grant from the Target Foundation and was co-sponsored and hosted by the Hilton Garden Inn Lakewood.
