Barnabas Health Institute for Prevention HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY IN YOUTH SPORTS
April is National Youth Sports Safety Month

Toms River, NJ— The month of April has been proclaimed National Youth Sports Safety Month. The national health event was initiated in 1993 by the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, Inc. to promote safety in sports participation.

The Barnabas Health Institute for Prevention, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Network, recognizes the positive and protective effects of youth involvement in a sports activity.  As such, they created a substance abuse and violence prevention program, Parenting an Athlete, to educate and build skills in parents that would reduce risk factors, increase protective factors and build resilience in youths participating in sports.

Parenting an Athlete was designed to educate parents about the importance of positive parental behavior at youth sporting events and their role in being the mentor, role model, guide and monitor of their child’s sports experience.

This educational series is designed to provide parents with the skills, tools and information to mold a resilient athlete through parent/child bonding, role modeling and enjoyment of and participation in shared physical activities and sports.

Parenting an Athlete is a five-week educational series for parents, guardians and coaches of children ages 11 – 18.  The program consists of five 90-minute weekly sessions focusing on five specific topics each week.  This includes: resiliency; communication; sportsmanship; expectations and goal setting; and creating balance.

The Parenting an Athlete series is available to all community youth sports organization, school system or parent group upon request.

The mission of the Barnabas Health Institute for Prevention is to reduce the factors that place individuals, families and communities at risk and to promote healthy lifestyles.  A leader in the delivery and development of specialized prevention and proactive programming, the Institute promotes professional and personal development through a variety of individualized programs designed to meet the needs of all segments of society.
