TIPS Tobacco Prevention and Intervention in Schools

In an effort to reduce the harm caused by youth tobacco use and change community attitudes, the Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Network’s Institute for Prevention has launched a comprehensive, school-based tobacco intervention program for intermediate and high school students in the Toms River Regional School District and the Keansburg School District– TIPS.

This innovative program includes, but is not limited to:

  • In-school Intervention
  • Referral to Treatment
  • Self-referral for Students, Faculty & Parents

Tobacco Intervention and Prevention in Schools

Why stop?
Here’s the cold, hard truth.

Addiction.
Illegal drugs get the headlines, but nicotine is just as addictive.

Chemicals.
You wouldn’t drink rocket fuel or eat rat poison, would you? A cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals – most of which are just as toxic.

Second-Hand Smoke.
Second-hand smoke kills over 50,000 people a year. Thinking about a cigarette? Think about your friends and family first.

Cancer & Smoking-related Illnesses.
Ever carry a 20lb oxygen tank around? Go through chemotherapy? Keep smoking and you will.

Death.
Last year, over 450,000 people died from smokingrelated illnesses. In fact, smoking causes more deaths per year than AIDS, alcohol/drug abuse, fires, car accidents, suicides and murder combined.

Pointing out the obvious.
You know what smoking does to your health and appearance. Well, so does everyone else.

Your Breath
There are plenty of scientific reasons why tobacco makes your breath smell bad. But if you smoke, no one wants you to tell us what they are.

Your Skin
What’s attractive about wrinkles, dry skin or a cut that won’t heal? Nothing.

Your Hair
Spike it, curl it, gel it, spray it – just don’t ask anyone to smell it.

Your Smile
Chemicals from cigarettes stick to your teeth, turning them a deep shade of yellow. If you smoke, no yearbook photo for you...please.

Your Concentration
Need a smoke. Where is my shirt? Need a smoke. I know I put my keys somewhere. Need a smoke. Get the drift?

Your Clothes
Wet dog. Old carpet. Sink full of dishes. Mildew. All the latest clothing lines created by cigarettes.
